OK, interesting. That would even mean that this is not a that important bug per se
because "normal" configurations will have -gtk(3) installed/used.
would there be a reason that I needed to install it manually? (I run xfce)

same issues as comment 6 (poor anti-aliasing, and ugly fonts).

Possibly ;) - (though this is less annoying than the slowness).
The changelog for fedora seems to have a lot of gtk3 related changes. https://pkgs.org/fedora-24/fedora-updates-x86_64/libreoffice-5.1.5.1-1.fc24.x86_64.rpm.html#changelog
many of whose are already in 5.1.5 rc1 (and will be in 5.2.0). I am not going to backport
changes like this to the dead-end 5.1.5 in any case, 5.2.0 will be uploaded to unstable
soon (~ 2 weeks) because 5.2.x is what is aimed for stretch.
Fair enough, I'll check again then. Can be closed (for now).
