And this is the BTS for non-BPO ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if it worked better with newer GTKs than with what is
in stable (ok, only 8 "micro" versions more uptodate, but...)

You can do whetever you want... The "problem" is that bpo will not go back
to 4.4.x. 4.4.6 is soon to come (and won't be backported as it's never
anywhere in Debian) and then 4.4.x is out-of-life and unsupported upstream.

That said, if the reason is gtk3, as I already said on debian-backports, you
can export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk and go further with gtk2.
