Because your enchant is buggy.

The enchant in Debian is fixed to use /usr/share/hunspell:

enchant (1.4.2-3.4) unstable; urgency=low

  * Non-maintainer upload.
  * --with-myspell-dir=/usr/share/hunspell (closes: #549877)
  * remove RPATHs on /usr/lib...

As any package/lib using hunspell in Debian (and Ubuntu!) should.

For the transitional period where not everything did use /usr/share/hunspell
yet (We needed all Mozillas and enchant fixed); and for lenny-backports
compatibility.

I have yet to file all the wishlist bugs for getting rid of the old symlinks,
though.

Then you should not have lost the enchant fix.
