I can't reproduce that. In any way. It works fine here (except the known
crash with CJK locales but this is not the case here and not a segfault

This makes no sense because you are stracing bash now not OOo (oowriter
is a shell script)

This makes no sense either because you didn't do anything here except
opening the core :)

info gdb says:

You can also start with both an executable program and a core file
specified:

     gdb PROGRAM CORE
--- snip ---

where program here is /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice.bin (use that
one also for the strace).

After the crash you want to use run and bt for a backtrace...
