Bug#275046: openoffice.org: video in presentation (by mozilla-plugin-vlc): OOo does not register correctly to use mozilla-plugin-vlc
Package: openoffice.org
Version: 1.1.2-3
Severity: important
_rene_ asked me to check with the upstream if all those video-related
bugs appear in the upstream. So I did, and this is the second bug I
encountered during this check. Please note - I don't know if *this* bug
appears in the upstream or is debian specific, I am not able to check this
(though I *suspect* that it may appear in the upstream and debian itself, but
in each place being slightly different). That is because the thing is
about cooperation between the two packages mozilla-plugin-vlc and openoffice.org
ok. _rene_ had asked me whether I just 'aptitude install
mozilla-plugin-vlc' and videos in OOo did Just Work (tm). That is a very
good question, because at first I thought that the answer is "yes".
Now when I wanted to check whether all those bugs appear in the upstream
I just installed OOo in ~/tmp/OOo while using a different user account than
my ordinary account, and I just launched OOo 1.1.3 and guess what? I'm not
able to insert a video into a presentation, the item in a menu is just
grayed out. So I launch a debian's OOo version 1.1.2 and here the item
in a menu is also grayed out. The conclusion here is that I'm unable to
insert videos into presentations with a user account different than the
one I use everytime. That is really suspectible.
I did checked this thing about three (or more times) and the solution is
following:
1. as root 'adduser foo'
2. cp ..../video.mpg /home/foo/
Now I'm acting here as foo:
3. login as foo ; startx
4. launch openoffice presentation (debian or upstream, doesn't matter which)
5. see that menu item: insert->object->video is grayed out (even though
package mozilla-plugin-vlc is installed)
6. close OpenOffice
7. launch 'galeon'
8. open in galeon video.mpg
9. watch it playing
10. launch OOo presentation again
11. see: insert->object->video is NOT grayed out
12. insert into presentation video.mpg
13. watch it playing
The conclusion here is that galeon is *doing* something to the plugin,
like registering it somewhere, so that OpenOffice "sees" it.
That is obviously a bug, OOo should see a plugin without a help from
geleon :)
