more fun, from glibc documentation:

	Older Unix systems did not have the functions just described.
[this includes tmpfile]
	Instead they used `mktemp' and `mkstemp'.

so mkstemp is likely more portable.

anyway, if you don't care about identifying that file in /tmp my
guess is that tmpfile is faster.
