In 2003, I was taken along to the Debian 10th birthday party in Cambridge, and was apparently sufficiently pleased with the company there that I actively sought out the equivalent party the following year. My first DebConf then happened in 2005 at Helsinki (I was quite shy then, comparatively speaking), and the first one at which I really got involved with volunteering (in this case the task which is now called talkmeistering) was the one in Mexico a year later.
