2. Background
-------------
Applicant writes:
I'm 23 and live in a small market town in central England, and I work as
a network manager's assistant at an independent day school nearby. I
also do a lot of work in technical theatre, and of course, with the
Debian project.
I started out with a BBC Micro B that my father used for word
processing, tracking county cricket matches and so on. I remember
starting to use it myself aged about seven or eight, and it held me in
good stead until we had an IBM clone when I was about eleven.
My insatiable desire to understand how things worked has been present
since I was a child (I was the kid who immediately took his birthday
presents to as many pieces as possible) and I applied the same
inquisitiveness to computers. I used to install distributions from cover
CDs of magazines to play with, but always had the same problem after
being presented with a desktop: saying "now what?", and going back to my
Windows partition.
In 2005 I started working for one of the major UK hosting providers and
ISPs, and many colleagues in the office used Linux machines. One
colleague was a Slackware contributor, and he encouraged me to finally
take my old hard disk out and lock it away, so that I had no choice but
to make a Slackware installation work for me. This was wise advice, and
thanks to his patience and knowledge I finally began to stand on my own
feet, or at least understand some of the commands I found in how-tos and
other documentation.
However, I soon found myself spending more time fetching
dependencies and compiling software than doing anything productive, and
yearned for a distribution with a decent package manager and repository,
amongst other things. I tried many distributions on an old box, but
nothing measured up until I discovered Debian and the power of apt. I
decided this was the system for me and after breaking Slackware again
one day, migrated my main box to it.
I always intended my relationship with Debian to be two-way, and in 2008
I started out by packaging an ageing RFP and adopting a couple of
packages
that needed some love. I enjoyed learning and refining my work and
quickly added more packages to my list, always trying to produce the
most solid and conventional packages. I learned a lot from following the
lists as carefully as my time allowed, and from the invaluable
developer's reference and other documentation. I've also been involved
in the Smith English-language review and translations process, where I
hope I'm contributing valuable resources.
I became a Debian Maintainer with good advocation, and the next logical
step is to become a full Developer. It will help me to use my limited
time much more effectively, especially in packaging and QA work, and I'm
looking forward to becoming a more formal part of the project (and by
extension, to affirming my commitment to it).
3. Philosophy and Procedures
-----------------------------
Jonathan has a good understanding of Debian's philosophy and procedures
and answered all my questions about the social contract,
DFSG, BTS, etc. in a good way. Jonathan committed to uphold the SC
and DFSG
in his Debian work and accepts the DMUP.
4. Tasks and Skills
-------------------
Jonathan has a good understanding of the technical side of Debian.
Jonathan is currently sole maintainer of 9 packages, including 4
packages with
the DMUA flag set. He also co-maintains another 4 packages.
All packages are in fairly good shape.
Jonathan also answered my other questions regarding T&S without problems
and provided patches for RC bugs.
5. Recommendation
-----------------
I recommend to accept Jonathan as a Debian Developer. He is
extremely willing and capable,
and would be an asset as a Debian Developer. He has also shown that
he has an
extreme amount of patience
