Background ------------- Applicant writes: I'm 39, born Argentinian (Rosario city). In mid 1986 I've moved to Spain, and became Argentinian/Spanish citizen a few years later. I've started playing with computers in early 1982 on a friend's Commodore 64. In 1992 I've got involved into the amazing world of BBS's using Fido Net to contact my brother in Argentina quicker than the postal offices. The experience made me run my own Node at home. After that, I discovered the Internet and 'telnet' and 'gopher' services and started travelling around the world from my keyboard. At this time, I started working in a GIS company where I discovered AIX and HP/UX and I felt fascinated, so I decided to go deeper... I decided to install Slackware at home as my second system (a horrible experience for a newbie) so I switched to Debian but this time, an annoying behaivour of dselect (couldn't remember the previous selected packages and you had to go over the whole list each time) made me switch to RedHat (but missing an application able to resolve package dependencies)... so a few years later, I switched back to Debian (thanks to agi). In 1995 I tried to run my own ISP with now luck, but learning a lot of useful things that let me work for Internet companies from 1999 to 2003; Worldonline as Technical Operations Manager (from 1999 to 2001) where most of the systems were SPARCs and Tiscali as Technical Operations Manager + Portal Systems Manager (2001-2003) running FreeBSD. I started up my own company in 2002 and currently, mostly all of the machine I own runs Debian GNU/Linux. I considered it was time to contribute back to the community and that's why I got involved in Debian. At the end of 2006 I started going deeper into Debian and got my first maintaned package uploaded in Jan, 2007. I was an attendee of DebConf7 in Edinburgh, UK (from Jun 9th to June 24th) where I met lots of interenting people to learn from and I decided to apply for NM. Apart the maintainer tasks, I'm strongly considering the fact of contribute work to Debian on these fields: webpages improvement, QA work, translation and bugfixes. Google says: Lots of Debian involvement. Very professional/positive from what I can tell. 2a. Advocate writes (Frontdesk and DAM only) -------------------------------------------- From: Amaya Rodrigo Sastre <amaya@debian.org> I want to eagerly advocate Darío for several reasons: - He is already contributing to Debian, as seen at: http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=debian%40midworld.net - He is, and will stay, comitted to the project in the long term - He is technically competent and socially well functioning - He is a valued member of the spanish-latin american Debian community - And not less importantly: He is a good friend and he enjoys Debconf ;) - It is a pleasure to deal and work with him All in all, I believe Darío will be a great addition to Debian, and both agi and me are willing to work with him so that he successfully completes the NM proccess. 3. Philosophy and Procedures ----------------------------- Dario has a good understanding of Debian's philosophy and procedures and answered all my questions about the social contract, DFSG, BTS, etc. in a good way. He committed to uphold the SC and DFSG in his Debian work and accepts the DMUP. 4. Tasks and Skills ------------------- He has a very good understanding of the technical side of Debian. He is maintainer of divxcomp, djmount (sponsored by myself), echoping, ftpmirror, libfilesys-diskspace-perl, libmon-perl, mon, vcheck. I have reviewed djmount as well as a QA upload for iptotal and was impressed by Dario's dilligence and his willingness to research technical elements he is not familiar with. All packages are in good shape. He also answered my other questions regarding T&S without problems. 5. Recommendation ----------------- I recommend to accept Dario as a Debian Developer. Francois
