Inviting one (or more) DDs for a LUG meeting doesn't sound like a bad
idea at all; also, in Europe not necessarily the nearest destination is
the cheapest one.

www.skyscanner.net gives these cheap options for *return* trips,
*including taxes*, from places where there is a DD to Palermo for
February:

  London Stansted  53.48 €

  Stuttgart        76.04 €

Note that I didn't check departure times (some of these may be "check in
closes at 5 o'clock in the morning"), nor I checked extra costs for
reaching the airport.
