One way to work around the problem you're having is with a chroot. This method wil allow you to have a seperate filesystem space in which to do your development, including installing odd library versions and so on without risk of breaking your main system. There's a few packages in Debian which can help automate the process of creating a chroot area, mounting the various things like /home inside of it to improve usability, and even programs which automatically create and use a chroot when building Debian packages from source. The "dchroot" package is a good starting point.
