   Applicant writes:

While growing up with Apple II and Macintosh, I was introduced to Linux at the
University by friends. I started with the Slackware distribution in 1993 as a
platform for good C programming, tried SuSE, got into a first contact with
    Debian Potato in 1997.

My daytime job is to work as a researcher in Bioinformatics. This combines the
use of databases (with descriptions of Genes, Proteins, their expression levels
and interactions) and tools presenting such information to the user.

My motivation to become a DD is to add the most important packages for
bioinformatics to the system. This will reduce the workload for the community
that all need to invest these efforts for their local infrastructure and to
help brining Bioinformatics into biological labs with limited IT resources.

When I am accepted as a DD, I am destined to improve the bioinformatics
environment for the community as I need to do so anyway for my daytime
activities. For a deeper integration of academia with Debian I am also
tempted to maintain buildds for bioinformatics, parts of which are
fairly close in Hamburg. I'd certainly be a good porter for non-free
    applications in bioinformatics.

I am also interested in the Grid, particularly to tackle problems in
Bioinformatics. Hereto I'd be interested to combine apt/dpkg with
services descriptions for the Grid. From here, a community of Debian
users could evolve that contribute a chroot environment and spare cycles
along the ideas behind the GPU project.

2. Philosophy and Procedures
-----------------------------
This part was done by Scott Dier first, later I took over the application.
He answered all of Scotts questions well.

3. Tasks and Skills
-------------------
Steffen answered all of my questions well. He has several packages in debian sponsored
sponsored by others and by me.

4. Recommendation
-----------------
I recommend to accept him as a Debian Developer.
