Those damn string literals. Maybe it would be best to define them with
fixed size once, bite the bullet for the SONAME bump and never have to
raise it again.
As it is now, the ABI could even break with different build parameters,
because these are stored in the mad_build[] char array.

I would probably revert this to avoid a transition through new,
thought.
Yes, let's better see and coordinate with upstream than effectively
releasing our own fork of the fork.
