Did you get any error message?

Which version of Debian are you running, Woody, Sarge? Kernel version?
Other useful information is the output of 'lsmod' and possibly 'lspci'

Have you tried DeMuDi?

Most people who are serious about audio seem to be using ALSA these days, it 
may not make much difference to you if you only want system sounds and to 
listen to CDs, but you will probably be able to get more advice when it 
doesn't work.
