Well, I don't think they are the "official" players for Debian. They're just
the most widely used.

There are hundreds of mails on debian-legal and debian-devel about this issue.
Just look at the archives and be prepared to read a lot. There's been a
recent (and not too flamewar-like) thread about mplayer on debian-devel by
the way.
