well, that part works perfectly well - apart from the fact that I'm
unhappy to run hardware which can be stopped by user level code.

I don't see the relation to the hardware issue.

Well, IIRC you could *build* gcc on gabrielli, but please DO NOT run
the testsuite as this lets the machine crash.
