More info on the subject...  Thanks to the excellent document[1] written by
Aurelien Jarno, I managed to create a mips-qemu image and reproduce the
failure.  First observation: pandoc was compiled fine with the Etch version
of binutils (2.17).  So this seems more of an issue with binutils 2.18, as
evidenced by the "assertion fail" warning issued.
