Thanks for your report.
Can you try this:
$ apt-get source kaffe
$ cd kaffe-1.1.4.PRECVS8
$ echo "INITRP_ENGINE = yes" > debian/rules.mips-linux
$ debuild (or dpkg-buildpackage or what you want to build the package)
Then install the resulting package and test it. Thanks to tell me what
the result was. If it's ok, I'll add that file to the new upload I'll
make in a few days (waiting for some things to be fixed upstream).
