As of CoLo 1.14 there is a better way to achieve this :-

	var kconsole ''
	-var kconsole console=ttyS0,{console-speed}

	exec root=/dev/hda2 {kconsole}

This will "do the right thing" and only pass the console=... to the
kernel if the serial port is enabled in the boot loader.
