I changed my XF86config-4 this way:
Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen"
        Device "SGI O2"
        Monitor "NEC MultiSync LCD 1700v"
        DefaultDepth 16
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth 16
                Modes "1024x768"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

and run, with the same blank result:
X :0 vt7 -fbbpp 16 -query 192.168.2.34

dmesg, still show the same colormap problem.

I checked out the kernel at linux-mips, so if you want me to test
anything, you may send a new kernel or just a patch against the CVS.

Bye,
Giuseppe
