This SCSI chip is AFAIK not yet supported by the kernel.

Recommended by whom? kernel-patch-2.4.27-mips exists only in form of
source.

kernel-patch-2.4.27-mips contains one, you can get it via
"apt-get source kernel-patch-2.4.27-mips" if your sources.list has the
appropriate deb-src line.
