Re: I have a heavy problem on O2(r5k) 180Mhz

I tried to install debian-mips on my SGI O2(r5k).
I tried the same a few weeks ago, I did not succeed, but I also did not

first of all, i tried boot from cdrom. but it doesn't work. :(
Right.
I read some articles on internet. I got SGI O2 can boot only irix cdrom.
Or a specially build CD-image _maybe_, but I did not try this.
so i tried to bootp(). with kernel of
http://www.linux-mips.org/~glaurung
and i successed to boot with nfs root.
Please tell us the kernel you used. For me only the 64bit version for
r5k with version 2.5.47 worked. The 32bit version booted, but had
problems while mounting root via nfs.
but i had no root image(root is /sgifs on nfs). so i uncompressed
/cdrom/dists/woody/main/disks-mips/current/root.tar.gz to /sgifs
I did the same (besides the directory name). It is using that image and
startes the installer. After several kernel panics, hangs and so on
(also randomly sometimes) I could partition and format the harddisc and
load the basic system from the web. Then I got stuck with
a) even more kernel panics
b) readonly target partition in the middle of the install (probably
because of errors, but since there are no logfiles...)
c) a dependency problem (I think it was 'awk', which it claimed to
be missing).
So I decided to crosscompile a 2.4.20 for mips64 and try this. At the
moment I am still learning how to set up and use a crosscompiler, so
there is no further step from my side here.
root(nfs) mount successful, but nothing on works.
Please describe more what is happening. Did you try multiple times?
(Because in my case the very same procedure sometimes succeeded and
sometimes simply hung forever.)

did wrong?
Well, according to all I have read, O2 is still unsupported, but with
patience, a little bit (more?) work and maybe luck you can do that by
hand somehow.
If you (or someone else) knows more about this, I will be happy to hear it.
