You dont' have to do this, you can:
 - let the "make system bootable" step fail
 - reboot over the net
 - finish base-config
 - apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.19-r4k-ip22 arcboot
 (I'd use the arcboot from unstable).
Since arcboot (~65kB) is much smaller than the kernel it will fit into
the vh created by Irix.
