Load the hal2 module with "modprobe hal2" or add it to /etc/modules.

Ladis is working on the video. Nobody cared about ISDN yet.

What applets are dying?
Do you have an 8bit newport card? Then the later might be due to the X
server running out of colormap entries. I'd recommend xfce as desktop.
Furthermore upgrading at least the xserver-xfree86 to the one from
testing might be a good idea since lots of fixes went in there.
