Academic articles are one aspect of upstream metadata and are only a possibility because the UpstreamMetadata proposal originated in the Debian Science (or Debian Med, I forget) team and references are very useful for those teams. If no academic articles have been published about a package, then there will be none to add to the upstream metadata file.
