Sven answered your question with regards to backports, but another
approach you may want to consider would be to backport this patch on
top of the current ipmitool package in wheezy, and make it available
to users as part of the next stable update (presumably 7.7). This has
the advantage that users on wheezy will get an updated ipmitool
package once they upgrade to the next stable point release, whereas
with backports they must specifically add the backports repo to their
APT sources and choose to explicitly install the backported package.
The release team's criteria for accepting an updated package into a
point release is obviously much more strict than getting a package
into backports, but it's still something to consider assuming that the
required changes are fairly minimal and easy to review (i.e. try to
make the debdiff that you send to the release team as small as
possible). See devref 5.5.1 [1] for a description of the entire
process.
