I second Eric on that.

It's good that you have a spark for contributing and I feel genuine
sympathy for you as I went down that path too. However, nobody
can/want/will choose the area you want to get involved with for you, the
thinking and decision should come from you.

It helps if you already have an itch to scratch. For instance, I got
involved with packaging because a specific software library that I
heavily use at work was not available in the main archive.

Regardless of the area of contribution, there will be a fair bit of
documentation to process before starting, as Eric pointed out. If you
are interested in packaging in particular, the Debian maintainer and
developer's reference is a must read, but more specific instructions
will also be given depending on the team you join (Python, Java,
science, GNOME, KDE...). I suggest to keep a separate bookmarking
section for that in your browser.
