Not all of these changes will be eligible for copyright protection.

Version control data doesn't end up in tarballs so it is not useful
for filling out debian/copyright.

Version control data is orthogonal to who owns copyright, just because
someone is the author or committer of some code doesn't mean that they
are the copyright holder (think work for hire, copyright transfer,
etc).
