All package uploads go into unstable (Sid), so all new packaging
development should also be done on Sid.  You might wish to look into
pbuilder, cowbuilder, or a simple dev chroot made with [c]debootstrap.

Or could you run Sid in a virtual machine, that way you know you have a clean environment which shouldn't affect the rest of your system?

Any further tips pointers on this?  There seem to be a lot of virtual machine options nowadays...
