Hi,
What if some of the used parts of the app are copyright by other authors?
I've now:
Copyright:
Copyright (C) 1994-2008 Sean Bolton
Copyright (C) 2001,2002 Nick Dowell.
Copyright (C) 1999 S. J. Brookes. Copyright (C) 2002 Mats
Copyright
(C) 2002-4 Tim Goetze.
Copyright (C) 2003 Peter Hanappe
Copyright (C) 2003 Fons Adriaensen.
Copyright (C) 2004 Paul Davis
Or should I list which specific file or part belongs to the author? How?
Dear Grammostola,
it depends on the license of the package: if these copyright statements come
from different licenses requiring to preserve the statements in the documents
accompanying the binary programs (like many "BSD" or "MIT" licenses, then you
will have to reproduce them in debian/copyright. Typically the clause will be:
“ Redistributions in binary form must reproduce the above copyright
notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer in the
documentation and/or other materials provided with the distribution. ”
Otherwise, this is a matter of taste. There are discussions on -devel to define
a consensus on what our Policy requires (§2.3). In addition we asked to
Software in the Public Interest (SPI) if they can kindly ask their lawyer to
provide us some legal advice on the subject, so we may reach a final conclusion
in a few monthes.
