My suggestion would be:
File a bug upstream asking for IPv6 support.
Marked the Debian bug as forwarded to the upstream bug.
When you have time to implement it, send a patch to the upstream bug
and discuss the patch with upstream and fix it until they accept the
patch.
If they accept the patch, package the new upstream version, or
backport the patch to Debian.
If they don't accept it, decide if you want to maintain it or not.
