It hasn't been fully audited properly, and some of the software has
probably been in Debian for years, but you might find something
interesting there that is suitable.

Other places to find interesting software: http://freshmeat.net, the
Development section in the weekly LWN.

Adopting one of the orphaned packages (or doing sponsored QA uploads
on them) could be another task that would be as (or more) useful to
Debian, and would probably be easier than packaging new stuff.
