My thought was that they might cause confusion if someone wanted to contact
the Debian Developer who uploaded the package. Obviously I was only
referring to the "packaging" references and not to the other work he did on
the program.

There isn't anything that says that the "packaging" process mustn't touch
the 'upstream' program, it often has to, the Makefile for instance. All the
changes get documented in the <package>.diff.gz for anyone who wants to view
them.
