There's no way to do what you did.  You can turn the .diff.gz into a
patch, but that wouldn't split it into meaningful changesets, nor
would it include the original patch submitter or a useful description.
 However, it's still better than having the stuff in the .diff.gz,
since you will be able to use small patches from now on.
