It would be a good test to use:

  dh_install tdnewmsg.conf etc

which I think will work (assuming, of course, that tdnewmsg.conf is in
the current directory).  Then you can just `find -name tdnewmsg.conf`,
possibly after commenting out dh_clean again, to discover what
directory is being used use.

And what about export DH_VERBOSE=1 ?
