It is compiled to save time. It isn't a shared library
because it is a mainline (contains main() function).
There could be more than one of them (with different
functionality).

Yes, I wrote it.

Yes. There is a bug in the package, the object file
doesn't go where it 'normally' does.. which lead to the
question where should a mainline object (.o) file be put..
