Versioning prereleases

Hi folks,

I believe that post-sarge it's possible to use '~' in version numbers?

I am going to package a pre-release of gimp-print 5.0 for
experimental and (later on) unstable. Currently, the upstream
releases are versioned like this:

gutenprint-5.0.0-beta2.tar.bz2
gutenprint-5.0.0-beta3.tar.bz2
gutenprint-5.0.0-pre1.tar.bz2
gutenprint-5.0.0-pre2.tar.bz2
gutenprint-5.0.0.tar.bz2
gutenprint-5.0.1.tar.bz2
...

When 5.0.0 comes out, I don't want the -beta and -pre releases to sort
higher than it, and I'd rather not resort to extra ugliness in the
version number. What would you recommend as the correct version
numbers to use in the changelog for a smooth upgrade? Are there any
examples?

Thanks,
Roger
