The 'alien' program is really good. But it is not perfect. And we would like Debian packages to be perfect! :-) So for a package which is going to get wide exposure it is not good enough to do the job completely. Also the version from woody stable has some known flaws. The sid version of alien is required at the moment to avoid them. If you have a package and you would like someone to package it then you can post a RFP (request for packaging) and try to get someone to sponser the package for you. That is really the best case because then you get someone who is expert in the native packaging to handle the details. If you are wishing to learn how to package for Debian yourself then both 'alien' and 'dh_make' are useful in different ways to get a head start. With 'alien' use the --keep and --generate options. It will create directories for you to edit and change to later build the deb. The 'dh_make' works similarly but from your source tar.gz to create a debian directory template to build your package from scratch. The packaging documentation on www.debian.org is very useful.
