I tend to agree with Colin's comment. How about asking upstream to provide an option to specify whether to chown or even a chown program (clean) or trying aliasing chown (quick). You could even use the chown calls to automatically create a list of files to be chowned in your postinst. (Although it might be better to review it manually.) Cheers T.
