Won't there be problems if $user installs mozilla-mozgest while
running mozilla-firebird and chooses later to purge mozilla-firebird
and install plain mozilla instead?

No. Unless you think "dpkg -s" is nicer. I had asked practically the
same question on this list some months ago, I wanted to discern inn,
inn2 and cnews.
