You might want to try debian-user@lists.debian.org.
The debian-mentors list is for those who need some
assistance creating Debian packages.
Sorry I don't know anything about squirrelmail, but the
problem might be an authentication issue. When you upgraded
you *might* have gotten a mail server (pop server, imap server)
that no longer allows plain text passwords. That's my best
guess not knowing the packages installed.....
