dpkg -i without removing old version

Is this possible, if the files in the package don't conflict between
debian-revs of the package?

Example: suppose frobz_2.0.0-1_i386.deb is installed.
normally, doing dpkg -i frobz_2.0.0-2_i386.deb causes the -1 to be
removed. But if the files in frobz are /usr/lib/frobz-2.0.0-1
/usr/lib/frobz-2.0.0-2, can both be installed?

I posted to debian-devel already but didn't get a response.

Regards,

Jeremy
