So as for having it be named .orig.tar.gz or .tar.gz, is there any real
preference or requirement? The files end up having the same contents,
just different names as far as I can tell.

To clarify, not having a .diff.gz nor a .tar.gz, but rather just a
.tar.gz is acceptable?
