Change it to your hearts content, but do acknowledge the previous
maintainer's work.

List yourself as the new maintainer in the control file, and the changelog.
Your sponsor will change the name in the changelog if he thinks he should do
so. In the changelog, mention that you are the new maintainer and that the
control file has been updated to reflect that change.
