The latest python-numeric package puts its files into
site-packages/Numeric and creates a file called
site-packages/Numeric.pth which contains the directory name "Numeric"
(without quotes).

There's something about .pth files in
file:/usr/share/doc/python/html/lib/module-site.html.

Probably only if the Python interpreter is run by root since other
users cannot write to the site-packages directory.
