I wouldn't say it is too early.  Go for it.

Also, start packaging something that you can show the AM that gets
assigned to you.  Someone (Martin Michlmayr, I think) recently posted a
good list of tips for applicants. If you are prepared, things will go
relatively quickly once you get assigned.
