If you intend to be a developer, *please* subscribe to debian-announce
and debian-devel-announce. These are low-volume *important* lists.
It was just announced by Wichert, I think in his capacity as Debian
Project Leader (DPL), that new-maintainer is currently being
revamped. There will be an announcement explaining the new system
fairly soon, I would guess. This should answer your questions about
the phone call. (I would assume, BTW, that the phone call will happen
at a sensible time for you.)
