So either use --prefix=/usr/X11R6 and whichever individual configure
options necessary for dealing with the problems of /usr/X11R6/share
etc., or do it the other way around.

[debmake v. dh_make stuff]

dh_make is based on debmake, but they are now separately maintained,
and dh_make is still experimental.

All that dh_make does (essentially) is to to create a debian/
directory which will allow creation of a Debian package using
debhelper scripts. You would do better, IMHO, to just copy the
appropriate debhelper example debian/rules file (from
/usr/doc/debhelper/examples) and create whatever other files you need
-- you can always look in /usr/lib/debhelper/dh_make/debian for
example files.

Remember that the debhelper scripts are inserted in the
{pre,post}{inst,rm} wherever you put #DEBHELPER#.

Also, as >50% of Debian packages now use debhelper, you should be in
safe hands.
