It's done with libraries and the kernel already. This tends to produce
package names such as slang0.99.38-0.99.38-6; the package name
is slang0.99.38, the upstream version is 0.99.38, and the debian version
is 6. This allows slang0.99.34 (as in slang0.99.34-0.99.38-6) to coexist.

emacs does this, for example ({x,}emacs{19,20}), so it might be justified.
Ask on debian-policy to be sure.
