Example package

I'm trying to make a package for Squeak, and I've collected all the
files, everything compiles cleanly, and there's nothing complicated
about any of it. But, I'm not sure how to actually make the package.
The documentation does a good job of telling me *what* a package is,
but a poor job of how I create a package :(

I think it would all be clear if I just had a tar of a directory tree
that was set up to make a package (like hello). Is it possible to
deconstruct hello.deb, or is there source somewhere...?
